"HOW" you ask, do I find these creatures?
Because I enjoy them so much with so much pleasure: with determination, perseverance, patience, intrigue, desire, and wearing sneakers, I find them. Long skirt and dress shoes don't work well. Exploring alone, I heard a rooster crow while on the 3,000 acre Brandeis hilly property and followed the infrequent sound (as I do for the loud peacocks). There are no direct dirt paths, and there are blockages with fields of endless high grasses (and I've seen a rattler and fox on the ground), fences of all kinds, gates, low dry river beds and distant cross overs, and scattered barns, farm equipment, and horses to pass beyond.
FOUND the poultry behind wire fences. With camera, I got low down on the ground and waited. (Blue jeans are helpful.) These feathery guys do not sit still, and certainly not where I am staked out. Same with the jumping, climbing goats and they like to grab at your camera. Cows don't move as fast, but horses do and come too close. Cows and horses may oblige and look in your direction if you 'neigh' and 'moo'. Goat talk is not as easy. Thanks for asking. - Joy 2.25.2015
Birds are mostly in my garden sitting on fence, bushes, antenna. Love the doves, mockingbirds and hummers that loved top of my fig tree over the years, but most very sadly died in the Porter Ranch Gas Leak blowout 2015-2016. The hawks are here. -Joy 11.2016
Before the sun rises each morning I begin to shoot the colors and forms in the sky, even if very cold and windy. If there is rain on the roses, I shoot them. I love shooting shadows, reflections, water, flowers, plants, trees, insects, animals, birds and fowl at a local lake. I even like shooting fish in tanks. I enjoy guiding Nature Photo Walks. I can't stand the gophers that continually destroy my garden and build mansions and leave holes everywhere. I enjoy sharing plants from my garden. With a terrible drought in Los Angeles, CA, it is very sad to see so much of the garden dying. I'm grateful for site, iNaturalist from California Academy of Sciences because I can get ID's on nature - plants, bugs and birds I photograph. As an official 'Oberserver' I love submitting my finds and I'm happy to help ID for others when I can. Happy to meet people so excited about our world of miracles and mysteries. When not shooting, I'm a professional percussionist. BlesSings for Observations. - Joy

I think this picture looks like a poem.
With each "gnarl", on the 'long fingers' there was a fig!
(I just gave away rooted and barren fig branches.)
Within minutes the two birds present switched positions.
Mockingbird flew off to very top of adjacent Fig tree, and Hummingbird flew to top of prickly pyracantha bush with orange berries.
Last year for months the two birds had their positions, with hummer always on her perch at tippy top of fig. She sits a long time, unusual.
But then, if she was in the big bush, I didn't see the tiny bird.
So far this winter, Mockingbird's song is not such a symphony as last couple years. I sing out to encourage the birds. :) - Joy Krauthammer 1.22.14

TORTOISES
I'm delighting in discovering the different parts of the magnificent Sulcata tortoises:
the shells, curves, skin, wrinkes, stretchy neck, facial features, and spurred legs, and how they play with each other. - Joy

From Salcatas' owner
"They can grow to about 150 pounds and live around 100 years. Mine are currently 100-120 pounds and between 11-13 years old. We believe there are 3 males and 1 female. Their names are Winston, Faye, Fabio and Minette. Typically the males have that protrusion under their heads which helps them fight. They will hook it under their opponent and use leverage to flip the other tortoise. If a tortoise is flipped it can suffocate as the lungs are at the top of its body and the weight can press down on them once flipped. We have two with this protrusion. We are absolutely sure that 2 are males. We have one that behaves like a male even though it does not have the protruding "fork" under its head. As they live for about 100 years their life cycle is similar or slightly older than humans...meaning that they are just coming into adolescence and sex of animal will be easier to identify. They are vegetarian and primarily eat dried grasses...alfalfa and Timothy hay. They do get 2 grocery bags a day of a mixture of squash, kale or other greens (never lettuce as water content is not good for them) cactus pads, cauliflower, zucchini and pumpkin when in season. Broccoli is dangerous as the iron content causes bladder stones. They are delightful creatures and a joy to watch. They do know us and welcome a head or neck rub when they are in the mood."

Amazing that I once danced with a Boa. Felt much bigger than the python.
After a life-time of snake fear, it took me a week to garner up deliberate courage to have snake around my neck.
DID IT!
