ARTIST'S CHOICE  week 52

Each morning for 52 weeks a year, I try to shoot the sunrise.
The daily challenge brings me much joy.
This week dawn was mostly grey and dangerously windy.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS. Grateful to have spent the year with 52Framers.

COMBINE TWO CHALLENGES  week 51

and "The Extra Credits" (E.C.)

Santa Claus encompasses many of 2016 52F Combined Challenges:
MASHUP GENERATOR: Week 12-Chair (E.C. Studio Portrait), 50-Different Perspective (E.C. After Hours -snooping on Santa).

ALSO Week 5-Shoot from Above (from a 2nd floor chimney), 33-Stranger (I never met Santa), 45-Birds Eye view, 18-Red, 8-Complementary Colors, 19-Hands (Giving), 46-Masculinity (bearded), 50-Different Perspective (snooping on Santa), 30-Calm (no reindeer nor kids), 37-Emotion (reflective, pensive), 13-Line from a Song: "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". 1934.

Combines Weeks:
4-Shoot from Below (to have lights above windows), 7-Lines (of lights), 9-Patterns (of branches and windows),
22-Architecture (of ceiling),
26-5PM, 30-Calm, 35-Window, 37-Emotion (proud), 40-Unity (for Tribe), 50-Different Perspective (on floor)

I feel especially good seeing the Menorah lit in my neighborhood large mall because in 1981 I went to the Mall management and told them that I wanted a large Menorah at the mall. There were many red and green decorations for other faiths for buyers to appreciate but nothing for the Jewish faith and Chanukah was at the same season.
Through Rabbi Joshua Gordon, obm, Director of Valley Chabads, I arranged for Chabad to build the large menorah for greater community to enjoy.  Rabbis come and light each night. Choirs come and sing.
A menorah still stands and that is good. Amayn.
By 1980 I also arranged for the local Veteran's Administration Medical Center to build a large menorah, the first time the VA ever had a menorah on their grounds, the then Chaplain, Rabbi Joseph Elsant, obm, wrote to me.

INSPIRED BY A FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPHER  Week 48

Robert Maplethorpe, obm  "Widely known for his portraits of artists, dancers and musicians as well as capturing scenes of the New York underground and high society, Robert Maplethorpe, obm is also acclaimed for his sexualized close-ups of the anatomy of flora. This image of a white orchid floating in a saturated black background is perhaps less provocative than many of his portraits, yet offers his distinct, direct and unique perspective on a seemingly ordinary and otherwise accessible flower. This type of classically aesthetic and beautifully stylized still life was prevalent in Mapplethorpe’s oeuvre throughout the 1980s."
- SCAD Museum of Art

Mapplethorpe  was born 7 months before me, and lived in the same part of Queens, NY where I lived in NY.  He studied at Pratt Art Institute in Brooklyn. I also did my graduate art work in Brooklyn. I love shooting garden flowers and some floral still-lifes.
Maplethorpe died in Boston, MA in 1989 from AIDS, age 43, a few years after these flower images.

Years ago I bought museum flower greeting cards by photographer Robert Maplethorpe and have enjoyed sending them to others.
This year at the LA Getty Museum I toured the Robert Maplethorpe photographer exhibit. In prior years I have viewed his photos at LACMA/LA County Museum of Art.  Mapplethorpe is particularly known for his portraits mostly of men.

Shi Ningfang.  Female artist Shi Ningfang presented last month, Oct. 2016, her show plays on the distortion between what we see and what really constitutes the artwork. This Chinese artist shares a very feminine perspective on the world. Shi Ningfang was born in Jilin in China in 1979 and is a graduate in Fine Arts in Beijing (Central Academy of Fine Arts). She is also an art scholar and researcher.

True to her research field (about the link between traditional Chinese art and contemporary art) Shi Ningfang focuses on paradoxes and distortions. In her art a bronze bell, supposedly a solid object, becomes squashy. In this particular way, she explores the relationship between masculine and feminine. Shi Ningfang likes to express herself through art about the world’s duality.

Ansel Adams  "You don't take a photograph, you make it."

Ansel Easton Adams was an American photographer and environmentalist. His black-and-white landscape photographs of the American West, especially Yosemite National Park, have been widely reproduced.

Each winter a couple decades ago I would visit Yosemite National Park with my family. Half Dome Mountain was always astonishing to witness as we entered the Park at night. A. Adams had a famous photo of Half Dome. I would visit the Ansel Adams Gallery in the Park.
Ansel Adams was born Feb. 20, 1902 in San Francisco, CA and died April 22, 1984, 82 years old, in Monterey, CA.  I greatly admire Ansel Adams and I am truly inspired by this photographer

BREAK THE RULES   week 47

Quack
Lake Balboa
© Joy Krauthammer  11.16.2016
52Frames PICKS!

Photography rules in Quack I’ve broken embracing the "notion of imperfection” include: dead center duck (no 'rule of thirds' to please the eye) and not having more space in front of where duck is facing and could swim into, and shooting into the light for backlighting where the duck is overwhelmed with light so duck is silhouetted. There is no pleasant grouping of 3 odd ducks.
There is a lot of negative space.
There is no interesting foreground of background, only expanse of golden hour sunset water.
I didn’t lower nor raise my body for better perspective, only stood and shot the duck, not knowing if my horizon is level. I broke rules!

AN ORDINARY MOMENT  week 44

Water Fountain 1
Lower End
UCLA, Santa Clarita, CA
© Joy Krauthammer

A water fountain outside office building. In this very hot Valley of local rain drought and mandated water saving, a fountain is not so ordinary because sadly many fountains are turned off; No water, movement, no fall, no ripples, dance, refreshment, coolness, no interplay, no source of loveliness and healing --when empty and still.  This man-made cement and blue mosaic tile, zoomed in distant scene reminds me of an ordinary moment. This very long water fountain, when I stopped and stood close at opposite large circular end, gave me a “moment” of respite after a difficult day. An ordinary moment to be quiet with myself along with a view of running water.

I really wanted to share the magnificent local sunrises this week that I photograph each early pre-dawn morning, but they are barely “ordinary”. They are beautiful miracles and magic of G*d’s paint palette and their radiance thrills and excites me.  Instead, I share the water fountain.

Edith’s tree's Persimmons: ripe, not ripe and also dried and brought home in brown bag.

More delicious than contents in my purse, suitcase, backpack or drum bag I just emptied after traveling.

SOUND  week 42

On a technical level, sound is a vibration which goes through the air as an audible wave of pressure and displacement. On a more artistic level, sound is what we perceive it to be. It is a physical thing, but our perception of it is what makes it real to us. When you walk past a window and see people inside laughing you can't hear them, but you know they are making sounds of joy. Capture that perception and show the sounds that make your life what it is!
  • Listen. As you go about your day, pay attention to the sounds around you, sounds that you would otherwise ignore. Listen to the ticking of the clock, the kettle boiling for you to make coffee, the water running as you brush your teeth, or the rush of a bus driving by you. How would you capture that so that the viewer can be immediately drawn in and "hear" the sound? Capture those little details, those tiny sounds that make up your day
  • What is the mood of the sound you're capturing? Is it a happy sound? Try high key or HDR. Is it a melancholy sound? Try low key or black and white.  - 52F

Sound Spa with Sounds of Joy ~  Crystal and Tibetan Singing Bowls

Sound Spa with Sounds of Joy is a symphony of meditational vibrational healing sounds. Sounds of Joy offers harmonic, soothing, lingering sound resonance. The singing bowls' sound and vibration balance the brain's right and left hemispheres, and help center our chakras, and 4 Worlds of spirit, mind, emotion and body. Sound waves reverberate through one's body for relaxation and stillness, and create harmony within the body. Resonate higher healing emotions of gratitude and compassion. Vibrations open energy channels for flowing, allowing for access to more joy, heart, love, unity, peace, Oneness connection with soul and Source, and higher enhanced, expanded states of consciousness in our UniVerse.

52Frames suggested: UNITY: "Use similar shapes, lines, and colors in your photo to capture a more unified look.”
"Use repetition to your advantage!
"In photography, as in life, everything looks better when all of the pieces fit. Unity in photography means taking parts of an art piece, and putting them together into something whole. Once these pieces are put together, the final result is something that is satisfying and pleasing to the eye. This week, your challenge is not only to incorporate photographic unity, but try and capture unity as a concept as well!"

Love Trains 1
© Joy Krauthammer

I love riding those train tracks.
Follow the train tracks' leading lines to the Santa Susana Mountain (northern Los Angeles, California, USA). At the top of mountain is where America's worst single natural gas leak in terms of environmental impact began 11 months ago (before) October 23, 2015, lasting 4 months before the Aliso Canyon, Porter Ranch Gas Leak Blowout was plugged at the natural gas storage facility (America’s 2nd largest). Thousands of people for miles were poisoned by the carcinogens and toxins, and suffering, about 12 thousand people had to be relocated. SoCal Gas Company has refused to pay our medical bills, etc.

WABI SABI   week 36

Beauty ~ Imperfection, Humility, Harmony
Ceramic Anagama Pot
by © Joy Krauthammer

During my ceramic graduate work at Brooklyn Museum School of Art, I studied with Japanese potter Toshiko Takaezu.  A decade later I created with Japanese Anagama and Raku firings and immersed my soul in Wabi-Sabi. I was reborn to unlearn, and learn new ceramics.  Unglazed greenware pots pick up patinas and glaze from woodash and rice hulls during 3 days in the hand-stoked Anagama kiln, fueled by trees we chopped. My Wabi Sabi story is in Week 34, August 22, 2015.

"Characteristics of the Wabi-Sabi beauty aesthetic include imperfection, asymmetry, harmony, asperity (roughness or irregularity), simplicity, austerity, humility, modesty, intimacy, and integrity of natural objects and processes.”  Wikipedia

WINDOW  week 35         This is my 3rd Framaversary.

Edith is pretty as a picture standing outside her window.
Model Edith was also my first submission photo for 52Frames in 2013 and at times in subsequent years.
It was awesome that Edith could stand (and smile) for that long without her sturdy cane, inches away, nor falling off the edge. She knew the photo was for the window. Next to flag was an abalone shell and ceramic mushrooms. I left them out.
Composite edit.

I asked permission of all the real people I did not know-- to shoot them. I told them all that I love purple.
Happy witches also wore purple.
A little uncomfortable (out of comfort zone) I only shot one image of each.
No one said NO, and these are the only strangers I shot.
'Out of the box' as well as out of 'comfort zone' but I do like the faceless portrait the best.

Mogen Dovid candle I have lit today in the memory of beloved Irwin.
Candle’s flame reflects Irwin’s neshama, and shines.
Rosh Chodesh new moon, shortly before dear Irwin’s transition from life to after-life into the dark night with little light.
White rose from Irwin’s garden.
We have loved Irwin, z"l. May his memory be for a blesSing.

CHAOS  week 31

I’m # 285 of 437

Chaos composite 8 photos
© Joy Krauthammer

I know, I know —no shooting TV screens for 52Frames. But it shouted CHAOS! This week’s US news was grim at that moment for the ‘live stream’ Democratic National Convention (DNC) and I shot it!  The dishonored DNC young lady chair resigned the next day for being caught with her dishonesty.

Whatever side you are on, having the Russians hack American political mail was incredible, insane– and what truths they told! The Republican nominee encouraged the Russians to hack even more US confidential mail.  The week before the wife of the Republican presidential nominee (who lied about her own academic history) had plagiarized for her own convention speech, from the current First Lady’s speech given 8 years ago. OY VEY. Chaos reigned on both parties.

And then it rained confetti with big red, white and blue balloons.

A friend plunked down a TV in the middle of my living room knowing that I did not watch TV, and decided that I needed to see who was running for president of the United States. This is the first time I’d ever watched on TV the political convention or election coverage. As a teen, in 1964 I did go to a presidential convention with a delegate.

I do not like Chaos and don’t want to see Chaos on TV or anywhere.
I had fun creating this Chaos with the photos shot from TV.

LOW KEY  week 28

Low-key photography is an image that uses mostly dark tones to create a dramatic looking image. Similar to high-key, which is bright image that has more white than black, a low-key image will typically use one or two focused light sources, to selectively light a subject on an otherwise dark background.

"Architectural Photography is the art of photographing a structure's interior or exterior, or an element of a building. It can be trickier than it sounds. It's not just about the obvious shape, or lines. It's about the lines within the lines, the shapes within the shapes.
"You need not be just standing outside a building, snapping a shot. You can focus on a particular element – a door, the stairs, some tiles, windows, infrastructure – or even go more abstract finding patterns and shapes to document."  - Yosef Adest, CEO 52Frames

First Lidded pot, First Slab piece, First Thrown vessels in my first Still-Life.
I had to do weird things even with my 'firsts'.
That same year and getting good, I won and used a full time year-long Max Beckmann Graduate Ceramics Scholarship to Brooklyn Museum School of Art.
My European refined Orthodox future in-laws did not appreciate the idea of a 'Khippie artist" in the family and although I was a very fine potter and was teaching adults at Cooper Square, a Manhattan art school, and ready to open my ceramics studio on the upper west side, I changed careers because of my wanting to be seen better in the eyes of my in-laws to be, and instead became an excellent New York medical social worker with a guaranteed income.  I sold out.

A dozen years later following my heart and at the same time enrolled in a Non-Profit MBA program-- I had a vision and opened an art school for the City of Los Angeles, CA and was hired by Cultural Affairs to be the ceramics teacher!!!  :)

At the same time I began my MBA classes I started studying drums and a few years later become a percussonist and I immediately performed with Reb Shlomo Carlebach, z"l, Babatunde Olatunji, obm, Reb David Zeller, z"l, and Debbie Friedman, z"l, and still accompany singer Cindy Paley for the last 15 years, and continue for the last 26 years to 'perform' throughout LA at spiritual venues.  During my earlier years as drummer I enrolled at LA Music Academy, and for years studied with dozens of other world-music masters.
My drums are not in my bedroom.
A few of my weaving are in bedroom.

REMO's red Apple Shaker is red as broken hearts.
This is one of the Remo Fruit Shakers that I play each week when I ‘perform’ as percussionist.

Remo Belli, obm, died one day before I shot this shaker at REMO's weekly drum circle. Remo Belli, visionary, philanthropist and Founder and CEO of the international drum company REMO since 1957 when he first created a synthetic drumhead.
During this drum circle we watched In Memory Of Remo, a slide show of his drum life; His legacy.
I submit this image instead of more beautiful red flowers, etc, because of personal meaning and mourning.

Jade Tiny Baby Leaves
© Joy Krauthammer  4.20.2016

"Crassula Ovata, commonly known as jade plant, friendship tree, lucky plant, or money tree, is a green leaf succulent with small pink or white flowers. Some varieties may develop a red tinge on the edges of leaves when exposed to high levels of sunlight.” Wiki

Thirty-seven years ago I planted a small Jade cutting received from an elderly aunt, obm, and now enjoy Jade all over my garden. I have shared the flowers in other 52F challenges.

 Joy Krauthammer  4.11.2016
This Grapefruit tree is filled with blossoms.
Recipe: Slice grapefruit in half. Top with red grenadine syrup or jam in center. Heat in toater oven or microwave until warm, and enjoy. Serve in bowl. Easy to eat with a wood-handle serrated grapefruit spoon. I learned this recipe from my father in the 1950’s.
In Nisan, upon seeing a blossoming fruit tree for first time, make a blesSing:

LINE FROM A SONG   week 13

"Mayim mayim mayim mayim, hey, mayim b'sason"
"Ushavtem mayim b'sason mimainei hayeshua"
ושאבתם מים בששון
Nevi’im Isaiah 12:3
Water Water Water Water
Joyfully shall you draw water from the springs of salvation
© Joy Krauthammer  3.20.2016
Japanese Garden, Van Nuys, CA

In joy I shot the waterfall during 52Frames 2nd annual Los Angeles PhotoWalk in the Valley’s Japanese Garden on the first day of spring. Our Photo Walk was an official participant in the United Nations World Water Day celebration 3.20.2016 and we gave blesSings for global healthy water and sent them to Flint, Michigan. Last year I also led the PhotoWalk at Lake Balboa for World Water Day.
As I am a percussionist specializing in frame drums, ala biblical Miriam HaNeviah, water is spiritually important to me as "Miriam danced with the women" after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea to freedom. We also had Miriam’s Well and Miriam saved Moshe from the water.
The song line I chose is also the name of a dance, which uses the same song lyrics. The dance ‘Mayim’ was choreographed in 1937 by Else I. Dublin to music composed by Emanuel Pugashov Amiran.
Mayim is water in Hebrew.  Maya is water in Aramaic.
(52Frames asks us to tell the story of our image and Line from a Song.)

Weeping 43 years old Pine Tree Rings
© Joy Krauthammer  2.22.2016

Shot other patterns (see below) but thought the tree is unusual & only at THIS moment with sap tears. Shot other angles with zoom but was very difficult because of all the big adjacent logs blocking each other and debris from 8 felled sick tall big trees on private property, and minutes before dump truck arrived early morning.
Very messy with the sticky sap that ruins clothes. I was in PJ's at edge of someone's private property.

Sisters In Rhythm
© Joy Krauthammer 1.17.2016

REMO, world’s leading drum company, offers free community drum circles where anyone can have joy of making music, and learn in workshops.

I’ve been drumming at REMO in San Fernando Valley, CA since their drum circle inception 20 years ago. REMO drum circles grew from the handful of us drummers with world master teachers, to hundreds of us jamming on a hot summer's night. Last month I brought my little granddaughter and her family to drum at REMO. And they met Remo.

REMO is where I renewed my energy through drumming to continue my years of caregiving and then return to my soul after loss of spouse. This very day, as I submit to 52F, is the 10th anniversary of my husband’s, obm, death. I’ve been drumming since 1986 and as percussionist and sound healer, I serve LA's spiritual community.

The Great Wall of Los Angeles mural, cultural landmark, on the San Fernando Valley flood control channel called the Tujunga Wash. The overlooked history of LA portrays not only past and contemporary times, but also a vision of the future. Painting continues since 1976 by Judy Francisco Baca and her team of over 400 people for many summers and is a work in progress. Half a mile long, 2,754 feet, and to be a mile long.
On Coldwater Canyon, North Hollywood, close to REMO Drums.

A challenge for me to shoot The Great Wall because it was illegal to park in some areas of mural and due to my fear. I was not comfortable walking alone to be standing alone close to mural so that I could raise my camera over the fence but finally I got the courage to walk alone as close as I could be to send Greetings From..

"Perhaps most overwhelming to me about the Great Wall experience has been learning of the courage of individuals in history who endured, spoke out, and overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles. It was true both of the people we painted about and of ourselves the Mural Makers.”
– Judith F. Baca

After visiting the Great Wall and before leaving to drum at Remo, I bought ethnic Thai foods.

BIRD

The bird was my inspiration with the clouds for the needed rain after years of LA drought.
Dirt slid down the eroding hillside creating loss, muddy messes and havoc.

Hah, I realize that Week #2's bird is probably also last week's visiting bird and used on Week 1 Self Portrait.
Maybe I'll shoot birds every week!

SELF PORTRAIT  week 1

My Essence of Joy

I recorded these scenes as I spontaneously discovered and embraced them.
Self Portrait is crafted in order to communicate one's essence.

JOY
"Crassula Ovata, commonly known as jade plant, friendship tree, lucky plant, or money tree, is a green leaf succulent with small pink or white flowers. Some varieties may develop a red tinge on the edges of leaves when exposed to high levels of sunlight.” Wiki

Thirty-seven years ago I planted a small Jade cutting received from an elderly aunt, obm, and now enjoy Jade all over my garden. I have shared the flowers in other 52F challenges.

I smile as I play behind white feathers strung at entrance to a trendy store in The Grove
that visiting tourists desired to visit this holiday season.
© Joy Krauthammer   12.30.2015

"Shoot yourself doing something crazy in public. Capture your essence, the way you feel."

My essence is spiritual, joyous, creative, sentimental, and connected in kindness, love and truth.
My essence includes loving (meeting) a good challenge, fun or serious. My essence pursues justice (Tzedek, Tzedek, Tirdof) and that includes being aware of Loshan Hara/wrongful slanderous speech.
My spiritual soul loves wearing garments of purple.
The tiny bird in composite, shot this week at the grave of my husband, z"l, on his 10th yahrzeit, was pointed out to me by my granddaughter.
(Since the 1970's I've loved the elegant doves in Spanish artist Alvar's paintings. His art celebrates the joy of life.)

I always enjoy finding feathers (a long full white swan feather in local Lake Balboa), but I feel pain if feathers are from victims of violence.
I attach purple feathers to my kipot/head coverings.
I think of feathers and I think of the only possession my beloved Grandma Ethel, z”l, brought with her to America from Russia on arduous ship rides over 100 years ago– her feather pillow– that she gave to me. There is a destroyed feather pillow in Fiddler on the Roof.

Grandma taught me to be careful with words. "If a feather pillow is busted, one can’t retrieve the feathers blown away, as one can not retrieve ill spoken words. If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all," said Grandma Ethel. She died in Atlanta, Georgia in 1988, age 88. I hold her in my heart. Grandma Ethel said that the Klu Klux Klan threatened to “tar and feather” her because of her kindness to the black folk, including Rev. Martin Luther King, obm.

So happy that friends have commented on Essence of JOY:

I like the joy shining through in your eyes and smile. Your colors also express joy. Is your Hebrew name Simcha? How did you put this together? I think it's very creative, and you need talent to do it, but for me, I think your beaming smile would have done the job as well. Looking forward to seeing more of your work in the year to come!

Vanity Mirrors

I smile as I see a mirror on a store's vanity table that reminds me of my hinged, 3 sided heavy mirror that had belonged to my mother, z”l,
since 1950ish, on the other coast.
What parts of my mother do I clearly see in myself?
As a photographer, I discovered similar interests and they surprised me.
(The green color on agave succulent leaves.)
Fun to see and connect with a piece of furniture reminding me of my multi-talented artist mother, who died at age 49, 1969.
Awkward to photograph self for portrait in store but also fun.

Lawrence Feinberg  The socks are cool…but represent only a part of you…not all…but maybe. They are hippie and fun! The colors are joyous.
I think the mirror of the three of you is very pensive…perhaps it does not quite reflect the fun part of you…but surely it reflects your depth.
_________The peek-a-boo aspect works well, as does the angle of your face, and the repetition of shapes on the feathers is nice.

"Creativity lies in this space of vulnerability.
In order to achieve full creative self-expression, one must surrender themselves to this vulnerable process.
Let yourself go.

Create a photo that truly exemplifies your essence. Don't go for safe. Don't shoot your "good side",
or make sure your hair is perfect. Shoot super close up.

*Shoot yourself doing something crazy in public. Capture your essence, the way you feel, not the way you feel you should be seen.

#THISISNOTASELFIE!!

In fact, this is the opposite of a selfie. A selfie is a relatively thoughtless shot, solely meant to boost one's ego.
A Self Portrait should be crafted, in order to communicate one's essence.
What's your essence?"  - Yosef Adest, CEO 52Frames
