August 22, 2015 ~ My 2nd FRAMERVERSARY, 104 straight weeks of 52F submissions.

Joyously I began 52F with MUSIC theme challenge on Aug. 22, 2013.  And I'm a performing percussionist.
I finish full 2 years with a 'Wabi-Sabi' pot. And I've been a passionate potter.

On 52Frames I’ve ‘Commented’ and Critqued / 'Mullered’ every week since being given that freedom to voice my opinion. I’ve loved being in community and creativity with 52Framers. IKIA52F. YKYA52FW___.  Love seeing and being inspired by your art and learning from you.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a dedicated member with 52F community for each of the last 104 weeks, learning, improving, exploring, creating, expressing, sharing, enjoying, and growing.
I’ve loved virtually being at our global PhotoWalks. Loved arranging the 1st 52F LA PhotoWalk (and for other groups).  Hope to lead more.
Enjoyed ‘Editing’ others’ art, and helping you choose yours. Loved sending in suggestions, and news.  Loved celebrating others' simchas. And surely loved being in Yosef Adest’s Ted Talk.
I may show up with ‘pop up’ art now and then, and even Comment.
BlesSings to all for creativity, improvement, health and joy, and meeting the challenge.

To those 52Framers who always ‘Comment’ – I treasure you.
My life has been enhanced knowing YOU in 52Frames.
I love 52F.
THANK YOU, Shai Davis and Yosef Adest, I've kept track.
It's my 2nd FRAMERVERSARY
and G*d willing, I'll be back after Sabbatical.
~ ~ ~

Happy that I have followed Yosef's and Shai’s advice for 2 years, 104 straight weeks, never missing a week.
"Challenge yourself. Try something you haven’t before. Build upon your skills. Don’t sit back and wait for it another time. Say, every week a new challenge.
"Community. Build relationships. Help one another. Ask questions. Be part of something bigger than yourself.
"Create. Make art. Express yourself. Have a voice, refine your voice, share your voice. Speak. Speak through your art, speak through your vision.
"So how do we help ensure a life of movement and improvement? Keep track of your weeks, and in each one, be a part of a community of people expressing themselves. “ -  Shai 52F

WABI-SABI   week 34  August 22, 2015    (My 104th submission, never missing a week.)

"Characteristics of the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic include asymmetry, asperity (roughness or irregularity),
simplicity, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and integrity of natural objects and processes." - Wiki

Beauty in Imperfection with Humility, Harmony and Balance.
Ceramic Anagama Pot by © Joy Krauthammer
Photo of my art by © Joy Krauthammer

In my Japanese Anagama style pottery making years, I immersed myself in Wabi-Sabi. In 1970 I studied with Japanese potter Toshiko Takaezu, obm. A decade later I created with Anagama and also Raku firings. I was being reborn to unlearn, and learn new ceramics.

Unglazed greenware pots pick up patinas and glaze from woodash and rice hulls during 3 days in the hand-stoked Anagama kiln, fueled by trees we had chopped. Read full story at end of Week 34.

NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
Over five cords of split wood are fed regularly into the then new kiln at ISOMATA, San Jacinto, CA. Ceramic students including myself take turns keeping the fire going for three days, day and night. The temperature must rise very slowly to prevent pots from breaking and a new load of wood will go in every 20 minutes.

Kiln builder Fred Olsen had to dig down to create an upward slope. In Japan, this type of kiln is built on a mountainside. The pottery picks up glaze from woodash and rice hulls during the three days in the kiln. NY potter Paul Chaleff fired up the Bizen kiln at ISOMATA. He and Fred Olsen learned techniques for building a Bizen kiln from Japanese potters who use wood for firing. More than 100 pots made by us ISOMATA students and staff were loaded. The kiln built of fire bricks and cement mixed with earth must be heated gradually to more than 2,300 degrees over a steady period of three days.

The Anagama kiln is a tube shaped chamber built partially into the ground that gradually inclines upward from the front fire mouth to the rear exit flue. Traditionally, unglazed greenware is stacked into the kiln and surface treatments are dependent on high temperature, fly ash deposits and charcoal buildup in the choking pits which come into contact with the pieces. This kiln is an adaptation in that it incorporates a second chamber more similiar in design to the multi chambered hill kilns of Japan. The second chamber can be stacked in Anagama fashion or fired with glazed pieces. The two chamber kiln shares a 20 foot chimney with a fast fire wood kiln.

We stacked the kiln with materials such as rice hull ash and seashells, and fired the kiln to get the rich colors, and patinas and ash glazed surfaces.
Hope you enjoy a few of these smaller photos of open palm-sized pots by Joy Krauthammer.

EDITED BY SOMEONE ELSE  week 32

Thank you Marina Shemesh for Editing my photo of Canna Lily.
Although Canna had been bright yellow in bloom, dead now, it was no longer colored but had fascinating forms.
I know from her photos that Marina Shemesh appreciates withered, dried, dead flora, and finds beauty in them, and that is why I requested Marina as Editor. I’ve been inspired by Marina and now I have that appreciation for finished flowers. I shot dead flowers for Marina and offered to her choices for flora. I shot with extra background space so that Editor could crop as she desired. (Heavy cropping was my unexpressed expectation.) Marina added lovely bokeh to upper left where gate had been. What now looks like a wall had been shadows of the fence bars on dirt. Marina faded the background to 'pop' more the pods.  (I need to learn how to fade.)

I Edited shots for two 52F members.  Theme: "EDITED BY SOMEONE ELSE"
My goad was to enhance each of the two images that I received from strangers. Each were Edited very differently and both with great care.

My Edit for Shoshana Gordon's original and her two cute gals: I was told who they are, and given permission to play and that felt good receiving a personal note with photo.
These girls are pretty and I didn't want to edit their faces aside from lightening, so I played with hair, shirt and garden.
With pleasure, I brightened and lessened shadows. Widened angled tree trunk to appear straight. Cloned out background blue area. Cloned grass where missing down to bottom.  Cloned blue shirt onto highlights. Cloned over wrinkle on pink collar, and deleted toothpaste from mouth.
Because I didn't know (at first) what white form was on lower left corner, I added hair, and to be equal, lengthened hair on other gal on right and covered her ears.
For whimsy, added Photoshop colorful paint brush flower garden, hearts on tree, and butterflies on hair came last.
Added watermark. Can you see it? Upper right area.
Butterflies like these happy gals so landed on them.  (I've never done whimsy before for anyone.) This was a very pleasant and challenging exercise for me-- editing another's art for Shoshana.
Thanks for choosing and trusting me, and for our conversation. - Joy 8.7.2015

Shoshana, a very gracious woman whom I did not know, sent me her photo and I edited.
I am moved by the generous comments from Shoshana:

"Go crazy do whatever you want. I have no attachments."
"Thank you for all of your efforts. I think it looks unique and it’s something I would not think of doing myself. I think we got this assignment exactly right."
"Wow! you really put a lot of time and effort into this!
"The hair, the grass, the exposure, and the colors are wonderful!

I love your “garden extras” and there are more of them in the first edit. I also appreciate that you removed the toothpaste? milk? white stuff, and some of the goofy hair.
Thank you, Thank you. The colors are glorious!
I love it! Thanks!  It's very whimsical. Matches their personalities." - Shoshana
Joy, I had a chance to look at your blog, the flowers and wildlife are exceptionally beautiful.  Thank you for sharing it with me. - Shoshana
WOW, so grateful for Shoshana's enthusiasm. - After I'd send one version, so thrilled with member's response, I saw where still I could enhance thus sent another edited version. Shoshana made me feel so good and appreciated. - Joy

My Edit for Marna S.C and her original.
Because the portrait of pretty girl was sent to me with NO info, no name of 52F member, no notes, etc. and over sized beyond my stated size limitation, I still did my best to Edit portrait. I Edited three versions and separately sent all.  Since I heard nothing, I wrote sender a few times until next day, both in e-mail and in FB asking if my Edits were received. I put in this effort as a 52F member and wanted to know that Edits were received.  'Edits were received', member wrote back the next day. In addition, member claimed she did not know how to submit my jpeg, claiming it was not a .jpeg. My Edits are in .jpeg. I advised sender how to submit to 52F and sent one version again via E-mail and FB PM.  I replied also to her FB questions about directions to begin the process.

Although the final image is a detail of pretty girl's portrait, I initially made the effort to clean up the entire photo.

First was to Edit background because I found building and a white bucket distracting from face. I brightened photo. Because girl's face was slightly slanted, I further emphasized angle. I decided to go more 'artistic' with photo. Although purple is my favorite color, I deleted purple shirt from photo as I think shirt overpowers the face. I included girl's wonderful strong eyes. Stark hair design is now cropped. I cropped out mouth in detail which did not look good with the outline coloring. I put a lot of caring, effort and time into these versions for the 52F member I do not know– not even her name until I asked after the Edits. I do not even know if member likes my Edit or not. I hope member submits my Edit on time for 52F album deadline.
I am pleased with my work.  - Joy 8.7.2015

PS. Very disappointed that Marna Schwarz Carroll did not submit to 52Frames album the Edit that I made with great care for her original. This morning a note from her came saying that she had, but it is not in the published album today. There has NOT been from Marna Schwarz Carroll any comment on my Edit.
- Joy 8.9.2015

PPS. Grateful that 52F administrators added my detail Edit to album at end.  8.11.2015
Member still never commented on my Edit but many others like it.

MAGIC HOUR  week 31

Golden Hour, half hour before and after sunset (or sunrise) with sun close to horizon.

"There is a sixth sense, the natural religious sense, the sense of wonder." - D.H. Lawrence

"Magic Hour" (sometimes called the "Golden Hour") refers to the magical slice of time just after sunrise or just before sunset. It is not necessarily an hour; the duration depends on your latitude and season. The gorgeous light is caused by the sun that is low in the sky and so casts a warm, orange glow to everything it touches." - 52F

For me, that Magic time is both before and after both suns. I may be outside patiently waiting a long time for colors to come before sunrise and maybe half an hour after sunset for awesome light and colors and to feel the thrill of witnessing G*d's paint pallete. My shadow may be long after the sun comes up, and long before the sun goes down. It is fun for me to play with my own shadow, and to photograph other shadows.

I had to drive out of area, away from houses, to try to find the sun setting in nature. The mountains, hills and houses obscured most views with good color. Most nights clouds weren't present to reflect color and clouds were low behind houses. Mornings were grey and bleary. Happy I was patient, and explored and found Magic Hour.
 Magic Hour. Enjoy.  - Joy

UNUSUAL  week 30

This week, July 21, 2015, 91 year old beloved actor and folk singer Theodore Bikel, z"l, died. As drummer, I was blessed each of several years to be able to accompany Theo for a single song. May his soul soar to Shamayim.
"Through the prism of art we become what we were meant to be, spiritual human beings. Souls untied from the heaviness of body." - Theodore Bikel

More Strange:
http://joys-favorite-fotos.blogspot.com/2012/05/strange.html

"It can be an unusual way of taking a photo, or an unusual subject. The main goal of the exercise is to push you to see the world through your own unique eyes (to develop your own personal voice as a photographer) and share your perspective with us." - 52Frames

My perspective is to try to discover and see inner beauty of nature, the Face of G*d, and share it. In addition, most people do not look into the center of a flower to explore it, nor photograph the inner space to share the beauty with others. - Joy

From above Week 30 photos. "Most importantly, 30 is the number of amazing albums we’ve created together this year. 30 is the number of Challenges we’ve struggled with, been inspired by, knocked out of the park. 30 is the number of weeks so far in 2015 that we’ve come together as a community, put aside time to dig deep within, explored our worlds, and made magic." -  Shai, 52Frames

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY  week 29

"Street photography is about finding humans being human. Great street photography will elicit an emotion in the viewer - humor, whimsy, anger, frustration, hope, despair, love (THIRST, JOY, Patriotism, Loyalty, and Honor, says Joy.)
How does subject interact with the setting and background?
Street photography is candid, raw, gritty, and observational.
OK to both ask permission or not." - 52F

I had the best time shooting at crowded summertime farmers market filled with many cultures. Been going for years, and never photographed. I have a photo of friend's daughter that I did not realize until downloading. I had made no eye contact wth most subjects, making it easier to shoot. Held camera up to eyes at a good location and clicked when people walked through and with 'props’ (food, balloons...). Sun disappeared 'going down', making task in shade more difficult.

28 shots, wheww
... and the winner is– candid and joyous with smiling eyes eliciting joy!
Very last shot of day after 100 Farmers Market shots, and in the Golden Hour!

REPETITION
"Of all the myriad forms of pattern in our world, the very first one we begin to recognize as children is repetition. There's something about the ordered, disciplined, calm confidence of repetition that soothes our need for structure in a chaotic world.
Photographically speaking, repetition serves as an excellent visual motif. It taps into the viewer's primal appreciation for order, and delights our inner child with simple elegance.
Discover color, balance, structure, composition and rhythm.
What pattern breaks?  What patterns and elements repeat? Is there distracting clutter?
Focus on repeating elements. Is there Rhythm, a natural beat to placement?
What pattern includes multiple 'repeaters'?” - 52Frames

NEGATIVE SPACE   week 26

Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others."  - Jonathan Swift

"In photography, as in life, what you don't see is usually more important than what you do.

Start seeing what you don't see.  Look for the spaces between objects, the gaps between forms, the areas around what you're looking at. As you look more closely, soon those shapes appear to take on mass of their own, and the space around is negative space.

Build tension, add elegance, reduce clutter, drive focus, and make the unseen shine through.

The Japanese refer to this concept of negative space as "ma" - its character composed of the glyphs for "sun" and "door." Imagine a door just a bit ajar, the sun streaming through - that open crack, that space of nothing - becomes more important than the door itself."  - 52F

DRESS UP  week 25

This week the Framers were asked to dream up a scene, cast a model, choose a wardrobe and light up it up.
In short, to play "Dress Up"!

Cinderella & Selfie
© Joy Krauthammer  6.16.2015

The 3 year old "Dressed Up" birthday girl then "Dressed Up" Baby Cinderella, and shot a Selfie.
We (from LA and DC) had shlepped all over Manhattan looking for the only birthday request, a "Cinderella" doll. Even FAO Schwarz (soon to close) we visited didn't have Cinderella, but we stayed at a hotel and a friend saved the day, and Cinderella was then ready for the photo shoot, after a lot of make-up was applied.

"Focus on your Focus. Too often, we run around all day, day after day, week after week, and we don't take pause to focus on our surroundings. To pause and look at the big picture, or the little picture, or the pictures in between. The pause to focus on what we want to focus on, what we don't want to focus on, and what we hadn't even realized was there to focus on. This week you took that pause! Week after week we challenge you to look at your surroundings anew, and attempt to capture a frame for the world to see." - 52Frames

A NEW TECHNIQUE   week 19

Liquid Amber Tree  #21
Lake Balboa, CA
© Joy Krauthammer  5.4.2015
In Autumn, the leaves actually turn red color and fall, but on this day they were young and bright green.

Cross Processing With Photoshop

Had a fun creative time following tutorial directions for the first time to create and explore ‘curves’ and ‘levels’ to alter photo’s color tone and forms. I then returned to ‘layers' to exaggerate the options and change intensity of red, green and blue in shadows and lights and darks, and then added purple, orange, and yellow. Experimented and played endlessly until I found hues, saturations, and shapes that I passionately appreciate. Like a hair, so thin, the tech move for the touch to change colors is so tiny, minute. I was so excited creating these limitless changes.

I enjoyed this challenge and process, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn a “new technique” with the tutorial suggested by 52Frames. I created 2 dozen varied alternate trees.  For submission, I chose the complementary colors of darker blues and orange because to me the blue trunk is like a river with tributaries, with a hint of hot lava. The reality trunk had been cream-colored and the awning of leaves was green. Coloring the tree was without boundaries, while trying to stay within creativity in harmony, balance and beauty and in awe.  (Playing with the alternates, the animals seen below, was like being in an adult coloring book.)

In addition, while playing with the digital 2D curves, I felt as if I were playing my 3D very large round frame drum, moving my fingers around the edge to achieve different high and low, sharp and dull tones to please me.

Tutorial:

One may look closely at alternates to see the fine details of color that I like.
First I colored the ducks, squirrel, and then swan, before the trees that I freely explored in color.

MACRO  week 17

"'Macro photography' refers to the technique of getting really, really super-duper close to something (usually something small), and making your tiny subject appear larger than life.
Macro photography encapsulates all the great things about photography: form, abstract, color, lines, and most of all: using the camera to reveal something that would otherwise be hidden to us, even though it's right in front of our eyes. Macro photography gives us the power to create alien worlds out of simple textures.
So this week '52 Framers' went out to find the strange, the foreign, the unusual, the other-worldly, and the beautiful - all hiding in plain sight." - 52Frames
Enjoy the 2 dozen Macro shots.  - Joy

but I appreciate their simplicity, delicious flavor, form, texture, and how they look upright, upside down and on their side.
Focusing in macro was not terrific,
but I like the composition of honest fruits from the earth.
For decades, I do grow blackberries.

52Frames Los Angeles Photo Walk and Flight

On a first day of spring and World Water Day, March 22, 2015, 52Framers and friends with guide, Joy Krauthammer, ‘focused' with intention on sharing water wisdom, chant and photography. This was our first ever 52Frames LOS ANGELES PHOTO WALK, and was held in the San Fernando Valley, California, USA. We walked totally around LAKE BALBOA and traversed the cascade, bridge and stream. Along with arbors of purple and white blossoming wisteria, the park is wonderfully known for the thousands of pink flowered Japanese Cherry Trees. Fascinating waterfowl are in abunDance and include swans, geese, mallards, pelicans, herons, egrets, cranes, cormorants and coots. We patiently waited for perfect bird shots. Colorful cultural celebrations were happening, and visitors from all ethnicities and faiths were enjoying, making for more fun photos. We had our own birthday festivity for Arnon and his family, Talia and Adir. 52Framers and friends also included Joy, Edi, Cherie plus Ruth, Judy, Jackie, Leslie, Joanne, and meditation guests Gilla and Kiu. The 27-acre Lake Balboa was a terrific location for 52Framers to prepare for “Levitation”, our week's photo challenge.

Went up to a stranger and requested permission to photograph him as he sat under a blooming wisteria arbor, and looking at a lake surrounded by blossoming pink Japanese Cherry Trees. It was 94 degrees in LA and he was warmly dressed with his bike nearby. His hoodie says, "Hellbound".
I was out of my "comfort zone".
I'd gone to Balboa Lake to photograph seasonal pretty pink flowers and purple wisteria for the SOOC challenge. I took 300 pink photos. I also got great shots of ladybugs and butterflies but submitted the 'stranger'.

RITUAL   week 11 - March 14, 2015

"This week's challenge is to identify and photograph a ritual in your (or someone else's) life. Pay attention to the little things you do every day that you may not even notice anymore. Find the beauty in those things we begin to take for granted because we do them all the time.

"Or document a beautiful ritual in your (or someone else's) life, that has special meaning for you. Whether a religious practice, or a meaningful activity, let us into that special space through the medium of a photograph.

"This week's Extra Credit: House of Worship (not your faith!)

Houses of Worship are wonderful photographic opportunities: dramatic lighting, beautiful architecture, fascinating scenes. This week, we encourage you to visit a church, synagogue, mosque, or other house of worship - but of a faith that is not your own! (pushing you outside your comfort zones) Remember to be respectful when inside!" - 52Frames

Sikh men volunteer serving donated, delicious vegetarian Punjabi langar / free meal, and use the spiritual power of ‘Sewa (Karseva) for "selfless service to others.” Sewa is one of the 3 Pillars of Sikh belief and goes with you into the next life.

The meal was served by Sevadars: Sarbjit, Harkirat, Gurcharan, Vinod, and Ravi SINGH, members of the Khalsa Care Foundation, Sikh Temple, Pacoima, San Fernando Valley, California. Every day men and women prepare, clean, and serve free meals to all visitors at the Sikh Temple. Because of Sewa, in their region of Punjab, India, every day 80,000 people are served complimentary meals. Punjab's Golden Temple has the largest meal kitchen in the world.

Scarlet Rivera (Bob Dylan's band member) plays the Peace Violin crafted by Rev. Patrick McCollum. A piece composed by Yuval Ron was performed for the first time, played at Parliament of World's Religions' "Seeds of Peace" conference.  Violin is constructed of diverse woods and materials collected from the sites of world conflicts and resolutions, and impregnated with materials collected from sacred sites connected to the peace process from around the world. I loved it when I was offered opportunity to hold the violin and was asked to bless it. I expanded the blesSings by having others join me with Shehecheyanu. The violin will travel for peace.

Seder Plate and Table to celebrate Freedom from slavery for Israelites during Exodus, and people today from all plagues.
Pre-Pesach Seder for women is held prior to Passover because women are always occupied serving family and guests at Seder. At this Women's Seder, biblical women are honored, and the journey to freedom is seen through women's eyes with wisdom, song and dance.
On Seder plate is contemporary ritual orange to signify that "an orange belongs on the bima as does a woman".
On Seder main table is ritual contemporary vessel, Kos Miram, Cup of Miriam to recall the Water Well
that kept the Israelites alive in the desert, and when Miriam died, the well closed up.

REFLECTION   week 10 ~ Mar. 7, 2015

I had on first day of this week's 52F challenge theme decided clearly that I would take the 'one' shot and not spend more more time on it, as I had on other weeks. Immediately got my "one" arty elevator shot. (Not quite 'elevator music'.) And yes, spent time ALL week shooting reflections.
Do you have a favorite? I would love to hear which one.
I have Reflections on car windows, building windows, store window, elevator doors, in rear and back view car mirrors, bathroom mirror, in rain water, pool water, TV reflection, and self reflections on mirrors, and in purple selfie contemplation.

BLACK AND WHITE  week 9  ~ Feb. 29, 2015

The lack of color in a Black and White image has the photographer and viewer see more carefully the photo's content, beyond the subject. Consider also: meaning, lines, shapes, patterns, texture, tones, light, shadows, reflections, and highlights.

Black and White Car
and Black and White Issues
© Joy Krauthammer  2.23.2015

Black and White was different to me when I was a teen in the Sixties in New York. Today, making my LA neighborhood a safer place, I work with local cops that drive ‘Black and Whites’. In the Sixties, I handed flowers to police while I danced with others in Central Park, and was afraid of the cops' ‘ready to use’ batons when I took over my Queens College president’s office, walked in ‘peace marches’, and played in street Guerrilla Theatre, etc. The Sixties was a great era. For me, these are 'black and white' issues.
Different from 50 years ago, I honor my local Senior Lead Officer Dario Del Core and Neighborhood Watch helpful policeman with this photo. - Joy

MAKE A STATEMENT ~ REVEAL DIVINE JOY  week 8

REVEAL DIVINE JOY
Dew Drops and Jade
Garden of Joy
© Joy Krauthammer 2.19.2015

A camera is my medium (as well as words, earth, fiber, or a drum) for JOYous and personal passionate soul-filled expression. With gratitude for the Divine, my photos reveal, reflect and exhibit beauty that inspires awe.
I see Your Face, G*d, in All Nature that I photograph.
Consciously with my spirit, heart and mind, actively I shoot the joy, wonder and sacred moments all around that I see, and my soul dances.
My authentic inner soulful JOY is my spiritual secret weapon of war, my personal attribute of Netzach (my endurance) in the Tree of Life, and my gift to others.
My kavanah/intention is that my creative expressive gifts are inspirational, uplifting and joyous.
My intention is to also REVEAL more spiritual consciousness, connection, compassion, and chesed/lovingkindness; to make visible the Face of the Divine
 - Joy Krauthammer, MBA, Artist of Light
Today, Feb. 20, 2015 is Rosh Chodesh Adar, a time for JOY to enter.

What is your Statement?
Thanks for asking and commenting on 52Frames. My "Statement" means that a priority every day in my life is to see, reveal and SHARE the beauty (miracles) of the Divine, of G*d, which in some way may be concealed. This foggy morning scene with tiny dewdrops on a common 1/2" tiny jade flower I saw at day break, and I'd never seen this before. Thus, in addition to being involved with many of society's ills and trying to do good and effect change, I try daily with my camera to REVEAL DIVINE JOY. I'm told that my arts heal, and that is good, thus I meet my goal and what I stand for. I hope this clarifies your comment. Glad you like the photo.

RULE OF ODDS   week 7

"The Rule of Odds states that scenes composed of odd number of subjects are more visually pleasing than scenes composed of even numbers." - 52Frames

Hummingbird and 3 Fig Tree Branches
© Joy Krauthammer

I have the greatest pleasure seeing the tiny bird that quickly looks in different directions, as if a guard.
I have my finger on the trigger while he's in the 'opposite' position so that I'm ready to shoot the second he turns toward the morning sun when his red feathers shine.

I chose this image to submit out of many set ups because it captured a moment in natural time with a Hummingbird at sunrise. Also, the 3 Fig tree branches during the season of Tu B’Shvat (birthday of the trees) appear to me as a Hebrew letter, Shin, representing G*d’s name.

I stood at far eastern edge of property to photo hummingbird on fig tree's tallest barren branch and facing sun. I was careful not to slip down the steep slope with one wrong step in strong Santa Ana winds. Hummer flew down buzzing/singing past my head surprising me, and I caught my fall.

Joyous Personal Love Story
"To Sister Joy. One Love. Baba Olatunji. Nov. 7. 1996."
Autograph on djembe head
© Joy Krauthammer 2.7.2015

In this Joyous Personal Love Story ~ following my heart and passion about drums since I was a teen,
I share that I became a drummer 23 years after teen years and my first revealed drum interest.
I'm still performing world music on ethnic hand drums 29 years after my first drum kit lesson in 1986.
Pictured is my beloved large cottonwood djembe, commissioned and made personally for me over 2 decades ago
by master drummer, Paulo Mattioli, obm.
Today, as I do most weeks, spiritually I 'performed' with my djembe.
I love it that Nigerian master Babatunde Olatunji, obm, autographed my drum
when I was accompanying him Nov. 7, 1996, at a club on the Santa Monica Pier.
Olatunji's "Drums of Passion" was the very first LP album that I ever purchased and that was over 3 decades before I met Baba.
As a teen, I traveled by myself on bus and subway from Queens into Manhattan with my babysitting hard earned dollars, to a big music store and this is the album that deeply touched my soul. I knew nothing then about African music.
My first renowned drum teachers were Baba's colleagues, and then finally the LOVE STORY with drumming continued when I got to play with Baba, and not only listen to his album.
Gratitute to teacher, Yoruba priest Ayo Adeyemi, for introducing us.

A dream I had never even imagined. A beshert story from the very beginning.
Blessed by HaShem to continue to play for others.

My First Tambourine

When I was 18 in 1965 and studying art at Universidad de Madrid, Spain, and at the Prado Museum, I traveled to the walled city of Avila to watch the bullfights and party with the toreadors.
As a memento of my fun adventuresome time, I purchased this pictured painted tambourine, and back in NY in time to begin college, presented the Spanish tambourine gift to a young gal, Simone (8 years old), for whom I babysat. It was that babysitting money that got me my ticket to Spain.
50 years later, Simone still has the timbrel and didn't know this story. Her 93 year old beloved mother Lilian, z"l, my dear friend, died this last year. This for me is my "Love Story", touching deeply my heart.
In Spain, for myself, I purchased a kinetic jingly tambourine gold charm, still on my charm bracelet. Didn't know at the time that I was allowed to actually 'play tambourines'. I watched the flamenco dancers play them.
Think I bought my first tambourine for myself in 1991 in Sibolga when I traveled to Asia and Indonesia with Simone's mother, z"l. Or the first hand-made primitive tambourine was when I purchased one maybe earlier from a church woman on the island of Jamaica.  Still regularly playing lots of timbrels today!
(Photography warning: While in Spain and photographing from behind a low bush, Generalisimo Francisco Franco, the gendarmes/police confiscated my camera because it was illegal to shoot the Generalisimo.)  - Joy
Note from SimoneThank you Joy! I looked long and hard at this when I was packing up my ancestral home and I didn't want to let this go—I had no idea of the story behind it but I knew it was from you! I had it in my room as a child and then it lived on the shelves behind the bar in the basement, along with souvenirs from our family's travels. 2.16.2015

COMPLEMENTARY COLORS   week 4

Purple Bearded Irises and Yellow House
© Joy Krauthammer    1.18.2015

Courageously (or with imprudence) knocked on the door of brightly painted yellow house that I happily noticed days earlier in neighborhood.  Because my fave color is purple, asked answering man for permission to photograph on his property.  When my camera card filled, I gave man a bearded iris.

Having found the yellow house with complementary color to my purple iris, I deliberately set up the artificial scene. I isolated the subjects and had control over both colors and the arrangements of objects in 'forced perspective'.

"A line is formed by 2 points: an origin and a destination. There are infinite points along a line.
A line is a journey of infinite moments.  A line is a constant change of perspective. " -52FP

Sunrise every morning is my ‘LINE’ to G*d as I  face East, pray outside, and
"I lift my eyes up to the mountains; from where will my help come?
My help is from Hashem, Maker of heaven and earth..."   (Tehillim, Psalm 121:1-2 Esa Einai)
Each morning is my meditation with my camera, in anticipation as I await dawn,

SELF-PORTRAIT   week 1

Extra Credit for personal story

Self-Portrait with Periwinkle Purple Pot filled with bulbs and seeds.
Garden of Joy
© Joy Krauthammer   12.28.2014
Gardening has been a passion of mine ever since I was a kid in New York. In grade school during the summer, I was sent to gardening camp.  When my husband, z"l, was ill, gardening was cathartic for me, and a healing meditation. On the first day of our 52 Frames 2015 Week 1 theme challenge, two young friends came over to gift me with a huge purple (my fave color) cement pot. In the pot, they planted Tulips and Grape Hyacinth Muscari bulbs, and tiny Purple Carrot seeds in gorgeous dark compost from their Granny’s garden and kitchen. This family is grateful for me they say, because at times I assist their 91 year old grandmother, my  dear friend, Edith. She sometimes also has served as my 52 Frames model.  I love visiting Edith in her bountiful garden. Thus this important relationship is a most meaningful self-portrait for me.

Self-Portrait Selfie

I caress my djembe drum autographed by Babatunde Olatunji, obm, from a concert I was blessed to perform with Baba in Santa Monica.
"To Sister Joy. One Love, Baba Olatunji, Nov. 7 '96"

As a teen in the early sixties, the very first LP album I ever purchased, and in Manhattan, was "Drums Of Passion" by Babatundi Olatungi, renowned African drummer and first major teacher in America. By Divine Providence, three decades later, I was able to study djembe for a couple years with one of Baba's highest peers, Yoruba Nigerian priest, Ayo Adeyemi. Ayo brought Baba out to LA. My purple SUV on the first day I owned it, carried lots of African drums to the concert. Since then, teacher Ayo has listened to me perform. I've been truly blessed to study with dozens of finest djembe masters.

Earlier I had accompanied Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, z"l, Debbie Friedman, z"l, Rabbi David Zeller, z"l, and I am blessed to continue to regularly play spiritual music with many fine musicians.  Over a couple dozen years ago, master drummer. Paolo Mattioli, obm, made this drum for me. He said that its comfort design was "like a Cadillac". I'm grateful to all my teachers and for the continuing opportunity to serve Hashem and community with this djembe.

Self-Portrait Selfie preparing to enjoy Indian Food
© Joy Krauthammer  Dec. 30, 2014

Here I am with veggie samosa and carrot sweets I bought as ethnic treats from local Indian Deli on way back home from having early morning annual mammogram. I had to wait for the samosas to finish being made. I couldn't hold the cup of mango lassi at same time with other foods. For years I've gone to this vegetarian eatery. The female co-owner recently died and her husband and son now run the grocery. Husband rarely smiles and now I know why. I miss watching the short elderly woman make huge cauldrons of daal. After she died, the family greatly downsized the restaurant to only a few feet in the grocery store, and the former eatery space is now an Indian spa. I still buy my favorite goodies–mango lassi yogurt drink, potato-filled warm samosas, and sweet desserts.

Early morning annual mammogram. I always remember to make mammogram the last couple days of December, just in time for 52 Frames week 1 of 2015
It was fun looking at the results on screen appearing to me as art objects. Glad the technician allowed me to photograph in office by the squishing machine.

Self-Portrait of JOY ON ICE
Brrr, 31* when I awoke, and it was frosty, icy, and skritchy freezing cold to scratch my name on glass.
I did this last when I was a kid in NY!

    I love that the issues are b & w!
Your caption is great…the evolution of our approach to the black-’n-white.
    You're so profoundly provocative!
The raindrops and wet street really show…
and I love your watermark on your plate.
